WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR CLIMBING SHOES

02. Jun 2025 Gear Tips & Maintenance

We all love our climbing shoes, but eventually they wear out. Knowing when to replace them ensures safety, performance, and comfort on the wall.

Signs of wear include thinning soles, worn-out toe rubber, and delamination. When the edge loses shape, you’ll feel less secure on footholds and your footwork will suffer. Sometimes a resoling service can extend their life, especially for high-end shoes. But if the structure of the shoe is compromised or there’s visible damage, it’s time for a new pair. Always consider performance over nostalgia—retired shoes make great training backups.

Don’t wait until the rubber is completely gone, as this can damage the midsole and make resoling impossible. Pay attention to fit over time—stretching can make shoes sloppy and imprecise. If you climb frequently, consider rotating two pairs to extend lifespan. Keeping your shoes clean and dry will also slow down wear. Fresh shoes can noticeably improve your confidence and technique.
