GEAR SAFETY CHECK: WHAT TO INSPECT REGULARLY

02. Jun 2025 Gear Tips & Maintenance

Climbing gear keeps you alive, so regular safety checks are non-negotiable. In this article, we outline what to inspect and how often.

Look closely at harness webbing for signs of wear, fraying, or broken stitching. Carabiners should open and close smoothly—check for cracks, sharp edges, or corrosion. Belay devices, slings, quickdraws, and cams all need occasional cleaning and visual checks. Ropes and cords should be free of soft spots or discoloration that could signal internal damage. Label your gear and keep notes on how long you’ve used it.

If anything feels off or shows signs of stress, take it out of rotation immediately. Store your gear properly and avoid harsh environments that degrade material. Even well-cared-for gear has a lifespan—follow manufacturer guidelines. Learning how to inspect and maintain your equipment is a key part of being a responsible climber. Safety starts with knowing your gear is ready for the job.
