HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CLIMBING ROPE

02. Jun 2025 Gear Tips & Maintenance

Your rope is your lifeline in climbing, so keeping it in good condition is essential. With proper care, a climbing rope can last for years and perform safely throughout its life.

After each session, inspect your rope for frays, soft spots, or cuts. Avoid stepping on it or dragging it over sharp edges, which weakens the sheath. Store it in a rope bag away from UV light, chemicals, and moisture. Washing your rope occasionally in lukewarm water helps remove dirt that degrades fibers over time. Use only rope-specific cleaners—never household detergent.

Coil your rope properly to avoid kinks and knots, and never dry it in direct sunlight. Retire your rope immediately if you’ve taken a major fall or see damage to the core. Keeping track of use history helps you estimate when to replace it. If unsure, it’s better to err on the side of caution. A well-maintained rope is a crucial part of climbing safety.
