CLIMBING ROPES 101: WHAT EVERY CLIMBER SHOULD KNOW

17. May 2025 Buyer's Guide Gear

Not all ropes are the same. Here’s how to choose the right one for your climbing style.

Climbing ropes come in two main types: dynamic and static.

Dynamic ropes stretch and absorb energy from falls—perfect for sport and trad climbing.

Static ropes are designed for hauling, rappelling, and rescue—not for catching falls.

When buying a rope, consider:

Length (usually 60–80m)

Diameter (thicker = more durable, thinner = lighter)

UIAA ratings for falls and impact force

Always check your rope’s condition and store it away from sun and chemicals.
